I have recently purchased a 1999 Lincoln Continental car with 118500 miles on it. As it is a used car, I do not know whether the previous owners have done any transmission fluid change. I got a routine inspection done for the car from a reputed mechanic and they recommended changing the transmission fluid as it was brownish in colour. I will definitely not do a transmission flush......but would like experts opinion on whether I should ; 1) do the traditional method of transmission fluid drain, refill and change the filter OR 2) don't do anything at all since the car is not giving any problems. Are there any risk factors in getting a transmission fluid change for a high mileage vehicle where history of any transmission fluid change is not known. 1. Flushing "was" a bad idea many many years ago. Why would you not do a transmission fluid flush? You don't have to get in there with a power washer, just cycle through the system a couple times with new fluid. Some people say that causes problems in your transmission, but I don't believe it. The theory goes that any gunk or buildup from years of neglect can become an intrinsic part of your transmission, keeping it together somehow, and by flushing that out for clean fluid you are taking away a vital part of your transmission that is keeping it running properly. That's ridiculous. If your tranny needs fluid gunk to keep it working, then it is toast anyways. All of my cars that I buy get tranny fluid flushes when I get them, even the 200,000 mile Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 I just bought, and they all have been better for it. A transmission is like any other part of your car, it needs a constant supply of clean lubrication. Don't deny it based on some old wives tales. Help with Fuel Injector project? I have a question that I hope to get some feedback on about injectors etc.. I have no real experience with fuel injectors and need some feed back before I go off half ****** and waste my time. What I want to do is a science fair demonstration. Where I demonstrate the performance or operation of a fuel injector visually. This will demonstrate how the car's computer by controlling the signal to the injector it can meter the precise amount of fuel needed and any given speed by controlling the on time. What I want to do is get a cheap used injector and fuel pump a from a junk yard. Mount the injector on top, facing down and inside a enclosed transparent box, in air, 8 inches above a fuel reservoir. In the bottom of the box there will be a fuel pump submerged in my "fuel". A colored liquid that is non flammable for safety reasons. I'll use a 12dcv plug in power supply, for power to the fuel pump and injector. I will connect the fuel pump to the injector with copper tubing and with a simple button switch control the on time and showing the injector spraying fuel. Will this work as you see it? Yet, a starter solenoid’s only job is to complete the circuit between the battery and the starter when you turn the key to start. However, not every start goes as smoothly as it should, and the solenoid might refuse to crank the engine, disengage the pinion gear or might keep the starter motor running. Fortunately, even with very little knowledge of electricity you can learn to troubleshoot a problematic solenoid. Gain the skills to test both on-starter and remote-mounted solenoids. For these tests, it is better if you have the help of an assistant. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Two jumper wires, 1 to 2-foot-long Multimeter Step by Step : 1 Check that your car battery is fully charged before beginning these tests. 2 Move the gear to neutral if you are diagnosing a car with a standard transmission or park if you are diagnosing a car with an automatic transmission. 3 Apply the parking brake and make sure to stay away from moving engine parts as you proceed with these tests. 4 Disconnect the coil high tension cable from the distributor cap and ground it using a short jumper wire. 5 Ask your assistant to turn the ignition key to start while you listen for a click at the starter solenoid. If you hear a firm click, go to step 9 if you have an on-starter solenoid; go to steps 10 and 11 if you have a remote-mounted solenoid. If you hear a weak click or repeated click sounds, go to the next step. 6 Unplug the small control circuit wire at the solenoid terminal. If there are two small wires, disconnect the one marked with an "S"; otherwise, check the wiring diagram for your particular vehicle to locate this wire. 7 Connect a jumper wire to the battery positive terminal. As you bring the other jumper wire’s end in touch with the solenoid’s control circuit terminal you should hear a solid click; if you do not hear any sounds or hear a weak or chattering sound, make sure the solenoid is properly grounded and there is no corrosion or other substance preventing a good ground. Repeat the test. If you still don’t hear a solid click, replace the solenoid. 8 Unplug the small control circuit wire at the solenoid terminal. Ask your assistant to turn the key to start. Using a voltmeter, test for voltage at the control circuit wire. If the meter reads 0 volts, there is an open in that part of the circuit preventing the solenoid from operating the starter. Locate and fix the open. 9 Ask your assistant to turn the key to start. Check for a voltage drop between the solenoid's battery terminal and the starter motor strap. The voltage drop should be no more than 0.2 volts; otherwise, replace the solenoid. Make sure the battery cable is well connected to the solenoid. Remember, this step is only for an on-starter solenoid. Step by Step : 10 Ask your assistant to turn the key to start. Check for a voltage drop across the two cable connections on the solenoid. The voltage drop should not exceed 0.2 volts. If it does, make sure the cable connections are completely clean and well connected. If you still read over 0.2 volts, replace the solenoid. Remember, this step and the next one are only for remote-mounted solenoids. Step by Step : 11 Unplug the small control circuit wire at the solenoid’s terminal. Using your multimeter, measure the resistance between the control circuit terminal and the solenoid’s ground bracket. If the resistance is above 5 ohms, replace the solenoid. The manual also specifies a viscosity grade in the form of a number preceded by the initials SAE. This grade refers to the "weight" of the oil and the temperature conditions under which it will flow. Diesel lubricating oil comes in the same range of weights as oil for conventional vehicles, and you can find all the necessary information in the section "Knowing Which Kind of Oil to Buy" in Chapter 15. Changing the air fitter The air filter setup on most diesels is the same as it is for gasoline-powered vehicles, with the filter located inside the air cleaner under the hood of the car. You can find directions for reaching the air filter in the "Changing your air filter" section in Chapter 13. You have to take one big precaution when you change the air filter on a diesel: Always shut off the engine of a diesel before you try to change the air filter. Diesel engines produce exceedingly powerful suction, and the air intake goes directly to the engine. Because almost anything can fly or drop into it — from nuts and bolts to your favorite hairpiece — you risk serious damage to the engine if you open the air cleaner with the engine running. Changing the fuel fitters Most diesels have two fuel filters — a "primary" filter located between the fuel tank and the engine — which cleans the fuel before it gets to the fuel transfer pump — and a "secondary" filter up near the engine — which gives the fuel a final cleaning before it gets to the fuel injectors. Both are usually easy to change, and your owner's manual should show you how to do this job. On some diesels, the job is much like changing the oil filter on a conventional vehicle: You unscrew the old one, moisten the gasket of the new one with fuel, and screw it into place. Others have filters with replaceable cartridges; you just remove the old one and pop in the new one. |
